The article provides an overview of the spiritual state of Dagestan society from the perspective of the development of philosophical education and science in it. The article analyzes the Islamic roots of philosophy in Dagestan, their achievements in subsequent periods and the vicissitudes of the last twenty years associated with the opening of the specialty “Philosophy” at Dagestan State University. University and academic philosophy have managed to strengthen the public positions of the Dagestan branch of the Russian Philosophical Society, but the ideological boundaries between medieval obscurantism and the latest achievements of philosophy remain shaky in the public consciousness, and the contradictions between Sufism and Wahhabism are irreconcilable, with the historical depth of the theoretical disputes between peripatetics and Orthodox Islam and the ideological foundations of the recurrence of extremism and terrorism. In the face of ethnic and religious difficulties, the local intelligentsia is trying to preserve the republic in the educational space of Russia and strengthen the position of philosophy as a key form of rational communication in the diversity of cultures. In the context of the changing world order and intensive contacts with border people, the training of philosophers in Dagestan need the resolute support of the federal center.
