The Concept of "Situated Cognition" in Cognitive Science: a Critical Review

Abstract

The article critically discusses the concept of situated cognition in cognitive science and notions of situatedness and embodiment in the context of recent research in the philosophy of cognitive science, psychology, artificial intelligence and robotics. The author claims that cognition should be treated not only as situated and embodied but also as independent of immediate influence of environment and bodily organization. Author discusses predecessors of situated approach and its relation to the more traditional computational models of mind and cognition.
