“Orthodoxy. Autocracy. Nationality”. European Project for Russia.

Abstract

A motto taken as a title of the article expresses pro-European, centrist, imperial idea. This
very idea has averted from Uvarov ideology the radicals as well as the right circles for more than
two centuries. On the other hand, certain American and Russian scholars are interested in the ideology of “Orthodoxy-Monarchy-Nationalism” taking it for the attempt of Europeanisation imposed from above (i.e. by the government).
The above mentioned theses are discussed in the article. The history of this imposed “Europeanisation”, as well as its failure during “the dark seven years” (the last years of Nicholas I
reign), are shown. We emphasize that this attempt demands serious attention and studies, particularly nowadays
