The Problem of Improving Media Education in Russia

The article discusses current issues of improving media education in Russia. In this regard, media education features are identified, such as the development of the ability to analyze, critically interpret and create media texts, determine the sources of media texts, their political, social, commercial, cultural interests, and contexts, interpret media texts, as well as the values disseminated by the media. Various media education concepts are considered: protectionist, “critical thinking” etc. The importance of the works on media philosophy, which convinces the need to teach media philosophy in the system of media education is noted. The article also reveals some problems in the formation of media education in Russia. These include the need to increase the media literacy of schoolchildren, students, and teachers, expanding people's access to the media sphere, organizing new forms of cooperation between educational institutions and media agencies. It is also relevant to improve the legal regulation of the media sphere, in particular the Internet. It is noted that media education requires the formation of a democratic state of law, allowing each citizen to have access to the sources of social information necessary for him, the ability to freely express their position on various issues.
