Abstract

The article deals with the concept of “the mass” that was used by Nietzsche in “The Will to
Power” as well as with Heidegger’s interpretation of the concept. The idea of “self-suffi ciency of
values” developed by Nietzsche in his late years, which is opposite to the concept of “the mass”,
is compared to Heideggerian category of “understanding”. The author demonstrates that in the
second half of the 20th century the significance of borderline individual and universal existence is
questioned by pragmatic-communicative interpretation of personality and “the mass” is replaced
by concepts taking their roots in “the crowd” by G. Tarde.
