Abstract

The article raises questions about the foundations of Russian Renaissance culture criticism, which began in the last third of 19th century and developed in works of Russian religious philosophers (P. Florensky, S. Bulgakov, N. Berdyaev, A. Losev and others). Is it a coincidence that criticism of Renaissance happened in the Silver age, which in turn called the Russian Revival? Is it a coincidence it appeared in a country, remaining away from the waves of Western Renaissance? Contradictions of Renaissance culture Russian thought regards as ”drama” caused by free self-determination of Renaissance subject. Russian Renaissance overcoming Western Renaissance in its reflection is looking for support on other foundations, which are proposed to examine, referring to the content of the criticism. It is assumed they correspond to memory of their own culture which receives the clearest expression in the age of cultural flourishing that in the case of Russian culture happened in the Silver age. Russian criticism of Renaissance considered on the basis of philosophical works and research works in humanities by historians, literary and art critics (A. Veselovsky, P. Bitsilli, M. Bakhtin, D. Sarabyanov).
