Abstract

The phenomenon of duality in Dostoevsky's works is rooted in his attempt to describe the
consciousness of a man trying to approve state the statement of his ontological status in the
Universe. Process of identifying “the personal idea “ for each of two points in the refl ective
consciousness was generated the body images, going to different ethical and ontological poles.
Artefact with which Dostoevsky faced while working on his fi rst novel became the
compositional framework for “The Double”. A number of elements in “Double’s” artistic
structure and its artistic idea is directly rooted in “The Poor People”. The dual narration of “The
Poor people” have led the author to the creation of the dual characters in “The Double”.
