Abstract

It is proved that Merezhkovsky must be understood not as a religious reformer and preacher
of a new religion but as a thinker rooted in the philosophical tradition of searching for the true,
original Christianity. Merezhkovsky describes Jesus’ teaching as a practice of unmediated
religious experience, it can be called existential Christianity. It implies the presence of God’s
kingdom on earth, with the true Jesus as the embodied possibility of man’s ascent to the Absolute.
The infl uence of Nietzsche’s and Rozanov’s ideas on Merezhkovsky’s religious beliefs has been
shown.
